St. Tropez in the South of France is about as “local” as it gets for a town with such a glamourous reputation. In fact, with a population of fewer than 5,000 people, St. Tropez is more like a village than a town – but a village drenched in glitz, sunshine and luxury.

Originally a quaint fishing village, St. Tropez is now world-renowned as a seaside resort – and a firm favourite with celebrities and VIPs. Yachts, exclusive clubs and extravagant eateries of course spring to mind when we think of St. Tropez – yet it retains an air of authenticity and a relaxingly calm atmosphere that anyone visiting the South of France simply must experience.

So, what are the best things to see and do in St. Tropez? Your friendly South of France property surveyor is here once more with a guide.

The Old Port of St. Tropez

The Old Vieux Port in the heart of the town is where you should begin your exploration of St. Tropez. Huge, sleek, opulent yachts bob around next to small fishing boats, while colourful houses and chic cafés face the water. Grab a glass of rosé and watch the people go by – you might even see a famous face. And, if you want to shop like a local, you can visit the Place aux Herbes – a market square where you can buy local flowers, fruits, fresh fish and wines.

The Citadelle

There are a number of museums in St. Tropez – the Musée de l’Annonciade is of particular note – but it’s The Citadelle that towers high above the town that you absolutely do not want to miss

Not only one of the very best spots for sightseeing, The Citadelle also houses the Musée d’Histoire Maritime (Museum of Maritime History), celebrating the lives of generations of local St. Tropez sailors and fishermen, putting this historic town in context.

La Maison des Papillons

Created by Dany Lartigue, son of famous photographer Jaques-Henri Lartigue, the Maison des Papillons (butterfly house) in St. Tropez displays butterflies in their thousands – some endangered, others very rare. There are over 35,000 individual specimens on display, all arranged artistically so visitors can appreciate the colours and details of these fascinating creatures in the best way possible. In fact, with Lartigue’s artistic eye, the way the butterflies are displayed is just as mesmerizing as the butterflies themselves. A fantastic place to learn more about these animals and spend hours contemplating their complex beauty.

La Ponche

The oldest and many would say the prettiest part of St. Tropez is La Ponche – and the area where the local fishermen and artisans live.

If you’re looking to escape the glitzy, rockstar extravagance of St. Tropez, La Ponche retains its rustic, small village charm. There is a very small beach, and the beautiful little church of Notre-Dame de-l’Assompition to explore – in which you will find a wooden sculpture of St Tropez himself. You can also hire a boat or take a boat tour from here or the Old Port – the perfect way to soak up the sights of St. Tropez.
