Today’s article is going to take in the slow pace and provincial charm of the stunning Aix En Provence and suggest seven things you absolutely must see and do while there.
1. Visit the Old Town
Known as Vieil Aix, the old town of Aix De Provence is a sight to behold. Starting with the Place de l’Hôtel de Ville at the very heart of the town, visitors can tour these winding and ancient streets, taking in such sights as the 17th-century town hall building, the 16th-century Tour de l’Horloge monument, and the old city belfry, complete with an astronomical clock which dates back to 1661.
2. Aix Cathedral
From its gothic portal complete with beautiful biblical sculptures, to its Romanesque entrance from the 1100s, the first thing which grabs you about the cathedral is the way it has successfully blended together so many different styles and eras. However, the main draw of this wonderful building is the 15th-century Burning Bush triptych painted by Avignon artist Nicolas Froment.
3. Musée Granet
First flinging its doors open way back in 1838, this classic style museum is home to over 12,000 works and is the perfect place to while away an afternoon. Containing pieces to suit all tastes, from a neoclassical sculpture collection, to an American exhibition with pop art works and original pieces from Paul Cézanne and Picasso, the Musée Granet is not to be missed.
4. Cours Mirabeau
If you’re after a little more hustle and bustle with your visit, then this pleasant promenade may be just the ticket. One of the livelier spots in Aix En Provence, this graceful avenue is lined with huge plane trees and all the cafes, restaurants and boutiques the heart could desire. Whether it’s a relaxing stroll, a coffee and a spot of people watching, a meal, or shopping which tickles your fancy, Cours Mirabeau has you covered.
5. Musée des Tapisseries
If tapestries are your thing then look no farther than the enchanting Musée des Tapisseries. With a vast collection of exquisite tapestries from the 17th and 18th century, this incredible collection features such works as tapestries from Beauvais featuring scenes from “Don Quixote de la Mancha” by Cervantes. If your tastes are a little more modern, then fear not, as the museum also features a range of contemporary textile art as well.
6. Atelier de Cézanne
Anyone who is a fan of artist and Post-Impressionist painter, Paul Cézanne will get a kick out of visiting his atelier and discovering for themselves where the man’s creativity took shape – and get a sense of his workspace. Offering a window into Paul Cézanne’s private world, this stunning studio only serves to accentuate his artistic genius.
7. Montagne Sainte-Victoire
On the subject of Cézanne, let’s round off our list with one of the man’s favourite subjects. Visible from the artist’s studio, this renowned limestone ridge can be found just 20 kilometres east of Aix En Provence and was captured on canvas many times during his career. The mountain peaks at over 1,000 metres, is scattered with religious sites such as the Priory of Sainte-Victoire or the Saint-Ser Hermitage and is topped with an ancient cross.
